Since the beginning of the pandemic, a larger number of home buyers have decided to pack up and move to a new location. Many of those are moving to places they have always dreamed of living, like here on Florida’s Forgotten Coast.
Moving is a big life change and a lot of work. Adding moving across the country to that makes the task a much larger one. Here are some great tips to help make that big move a little bit easier.
Prep, Clean, Declutter, Repeat
You can never start the packing process too early, even if it is just formulating a game plan and preparing to start packing. One thing we suggest when moving across the country is to take an inventory of your items to help ensure you do not lose anything incredibly important. On this list create categories for what is going to be donated, what is moving with you, what needs to be returned to an owner you borrowed it from, and what needs to be sold or dumped.
Start with packing items that you can function without while you sell your home. This is the declutter stage. You can also grab items that you no longer use and get rid of them in this stage. This way you have much less to move.
As time goes on you may find more items you don’t use daily or don’t need anymore. Every day try to set a goal of going through the items in a room or at least one area of a room so that you will be ready and packed up when it is time to move and not rushing to stuff things in boxes.
Two Months Prior
This is about the time you should look into scheduling movers or reserving a moving truck or pod. The logistics of getting your belongings across the country are going to take some careful thought, especially if you are planning to hire a company to move your things for you. It can take as much as three weeks for a company to get your things to their new location on the other side of the country.
Get Real
You may want all of your furniture to come with you, but it just might be less expensive to leave some things behind and purchase new ones when you get there. Moving furniture is expensive because it is heavy and takes more space. So unless something is a treasured family heirloom consider letting it go.
Pack Necessities in Luggage
Pretend like you are going on a vacation trip and pack some necessities you will need like clothes and toiletries as you move from point A to point B. Put these items in luggage so they are easily accessible and easily found amongst all those boxes. This way they won’t accidentally get lost or put in the moving truck.
